Roto brush - apply effect to BG question

#1

My wife asked me if I would adjust some footage that she had. In the shot, there are two people sitting on a bed. A guy is in the foreground and a girl in the background. She wants me to blur the background. So I used the lynda.com tutorial on the rotobrush and I have a good mask around the guy that tracks him nicely.

Now I want to add the gaussian blur effect to the areas of the shot that are not masked. how do I do that?

TIA!

Never mind - figured it out…

Invert mask.
Dupe the layer.
Remove mask from dupe.
Apply blur to dupe.

The way that you did it is fine. Here’s a suggestion for another way that can work better for some purposes:

Duplicate the layer. Use the Roto Brush tool on one instance. Use that layer as a track matte for an adjustment layer. Apply the blur effects and such to the adjustment layer.

Thanks for that!

Well it turns out that rotobrush cannot track this. So I went to mocha and I got a very solid, accurate track out of that.

Now, with that data in the clipboard, how do I apply it to the clip in AE so that I can blur everything that is outside of the tracked area?
