Hey guys. So for a while I was thinking of recreating this illustration. I did this piece years ago, before I knew any digital painting techniques, before I knew much about Photoshop even. It’s colored pencil with just the sky done in painter. I wanted to have some ideas thrown around from you guys about lighting, background, ect. Some story on the concept is this girl is with her robot guardian in possibly a destroyed/future city. I still want to keep the colors a bit muted and I guess the main thing I want to avoid is having the lighting in a “golden hour” or sunset style. I think that look is being a bit overdone. Don’t worry about the type, It’s a mock book cover. I hope to start this as soon as some other work slows. Anyways let me know what you think!

Robotocon - Turning Digital
I like this image very much!
Two things comes to my mind when I watch it:
-
The robot could have slightly more colour to make it stand out from the rock.
-
It looks a bit odd when the background isn’t of the same quality as the foreground. I think the whole image would benefit if the buildings were as crisp as the foreground. If you do that, you may want to fix some perspective issues at the same time.
I agree with Bleke about the robot having more color to push make it sand out some more, perhaps some decals or markings or something like that, or just changing the color of the lights.
I have to strongly disagree with his suggestion to change the background (sorry Bleke!). I think that the way the background is rendered gives the image perspective. I would maybe change teh “gradient” of the light in the background so that it’s darker at the bottom and more light at the top. Right now everything is so desaturated that everything kind of blends into each other. Having the bottom area of the city rendered darker would help frame and bring out your main elements, which are the robot and girl.
That’s alright, there are no absolute truths in subjective matters such as art.
But let me try to convince you. Take a look at this picture: http://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/3512/sophiemlove.0/0_10015_c5e09fc7_orig
As you can see, you do start to lose detail as the distance increases, but the major features stay quite crisp.
Also, as can be seen on the Chrysler building, aerial perspective makes them lighter at the bottom and darker at the top.
But these are just my opinions and not to be taken too seriously.
Id run a translucent white gradient (white at bottom going transparent top) to pop the foreground elements away from the bg. Id also add a more apparent thin trap line (varying thickness) around the shapes.
I like it ,its got a retro sci fi look.A bit washed out ,the thing that distracts me is the right bottom leg looks flat ,shadow it casts also looks odd.
