Hey all,
I’ve recently done a video of a pixelated robot attack and I wanted some critique on the video. It’s not my strong suit and I wanted some honest opinions and things I can improve on.

Thanks all
Robot Attack
Some thoughts:
It looks fake, obviously, because of the subject matter, but here are some things i noticed that might make it more “believable” fake:
- Maybe do a little shadowing on the roofs from the ships overhead - not much, but just a little to connect them to the scene a bit more.
- The ships further away should be lighter in color and less contrasty, because there is more air in between them and the camera – same concept as why mountains further away are lighter and less saturated than close ones.
- The source of the laser beam is moving around way too much - it doesn’t “stick” to the red block like ti should, which makes it look disconnected from the pixel robot.
Ugh. Well since you know that it is not very good already I am not going to start a rant about how many changes you have to make to make it looks better.
The robot itself is much better than the ships that fly around.
Even if your final outcome is going to turn out not as realistic as you wanted, you can also tweak the colours and curves in after effects. Use something from Film Magic Pro to experiment with some different looks.
Thanks for the response guys.
It never occurred to me the difference in contrast between the closer ships and the ones further away. It’s such a simple thing!
Also I did know about the Laser beam, that was my attempt at doing it by hand. I could not track it because the Pixels are so erratic that the track marker would be all over the place. I may try a shot of the original model, before it’s pixelated to get a better track on the eye.
I’ll also try tweaking the colours more.
Film magic pro looks interesting, maybe a colour change could enhance the shot. Is there a trial version of it?
Film Magic Pro is a large collection of colour correction plug-ins for After Effects. You can buy them from VideoCopilot or look for the other less cost effective sources
