Roberto's Bullhorn: LETS TALK

#1

First I wanted to thank all who participated in the last FXWARS mini challenge.

Thanks to all who posted finished entries and to all who participated.

I am posting this thread, because I want to keep the number of entries high for next week’s Frankenstein’s Castle one week mini challenge.

So lets talk about the recent mini challenge:

I want to know:
What did you liked about the last mini challenge?
What you hated?

What would you change?
(For example one idea I want to push is to start a point system, for those who participate, andfor those who win the mini challenges.)

How could we foment more the community environment?
Looking forward to your comments.

Points system sounds cool…

I think that could be a Trophy of the mini challenges added to the profile of the winner. So if you win you get a small icon of a trophy on your profile, and if anyone click it will get an info like “Best Overall entry on: FxWars XXXXXXXX” + the Date of the contest. Maybe the trophies could be seen in all your post to, and not only on the profile… Well that is for the Designer of the forum.

Also could add more trophies, i.e. in the case of FxWars one Big Trophy for “Best Overall” and small ones (could be a medal instead a trophy) for “Best Sub-category” and maybe give Gold, Silver and Bronze.

What I liked about the last challenge:
I was able to do it on live action.
It was focused on FX (not modelling)
Good competition with other entries (all the other entries were really good!)

What I disliked about the last challenge:
Needed more finished entries.
Lack of footage … we tried, but it woulda been cool to have more footage to use / pick from. I used my own of course, but getting a decent camera is a pain.
Lack of footage led to many WIP that we very similar

Yes the lack of footage is a torn in my side. The problem honestly is an issue of cost. I have the staff and I can rent a professional studio to do common footage, but the cost would be astronomical. Any ideas about this footage issue?

What about teaming up with the people in the film forum here on CGtalk, or with an ever bigger one?

#6

To be fair not all FX wars involve filming. Hell the next two that we have in line, filming will be an optional thing. (Frankenstein Castle and 8.5)

I’d say make it more of a competition… Make a smaller challenge more focused entries. Not so many categories.
If there are more restrictions you’ll get better results because people know what they have to do, and will try to be more creative in a stricker confines. Maybe even some models or something set up already

FXWARs is For Monthly VFX Micro Challenges

Prizes?
How about I’ll give a prize of one ( or three) of my gnomon fluid fx dvd’s to the overall winner. Not sure how big a sell that would be… more to add to the compeditiveness of it all. Hah, kind of like win ben steins money… I’ll play and people have to do better than me to win my dvd’s… or it could go to 2nd or 3rd or whatever.
We could solicite other prizes. that’s a good modivator. Doesn’t have to be huge (like a maya lic) but something. Maybe we could get some of the books they make on this site to be a prise those rule!

heh… like that would be hard… j/k

#9

Oh BUUUUUUURRRRRRRRNNNNN!!!

also, I think that having small trophy’s similar to the award winner trophys would be neat… maybe giving out a gold silver and bronze

I like the idea of prizes, but that’s probably hard to do obviously. Instead of a prize per challenge, maybe we should do a yearly fxwars challenge that would have a small prize (book or something) and last as long as 3 months, so it would be harder obviously, then go back into smaller 1-2 month challenges (like we’ve been doing)

BTW guys, how do you feel about this suggestion:

Coming Soon FXWARS- VFX Tribute (The Motion Control Age)

#12

I dig it

I don’t much fancy the frankenstein one though

#13

I think that the Motion Control idea is a very cool one, I want to hear more details about it before I jump on board for sure though.

The idea of the Motion Control challenge is to learn and pay tribute to the visual effects of the motion control era.
The idea of the Motion Control challenge is to learn and pay tribute to the visual effects of the motion control era.
The idea is to take a page from the art world, where master copes are used as a teaching tool. In this case the idea is to replicate classic VFX shots from the motion control era to learn core principles (like lighting, staging, weight, auxiliary effects.)

The movies in my list fo far are:

Aliens
Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
Stargate
Independence Day
Star Wars
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi
The Terminator
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
The Abyss
2010
Blade Runner
The Hunt for Red October
Fith Element

I still am coming up with the specific shot lists.

keep in mind, these mini challenges will be VERY short. Most of the models are available,
or better yet, we might do them with the hardcore modelling people.

And if this works, we might do other tributes… like
FXWARS- VFX Tribute (Phil Tippett)

or
FXWARS- VFX Tribute (Ray Harryhausen)
