Rigging Shoelace help

#1

Hi all, I am currently facing a situation of this animation close-up shots where a character ties his shoelace. Any idea on how you guys would rig that? Animators would animate the shoelace.
Spline, Wire deformer… blendshape? any ideas?

Requirements:

  1. Animatable shoelace
  2. Must be able to tie (Very important)
  3. Would prefer non-dynamic setup

Alright there are many variables here to care of .
First of all depends on the storyboard and the texture of the shoelace .
For example you can fake the tie /untie with stretching or shrinking the lace between the holes(if texture is uniform) if you have any kind of stripes or pattern in the lace that wont work .
for the end part of the lace i would go for regular fk and with secondary deformation a wire deformer or curve influence that i would link through a blendshape.

H2O,
If you need to do a real honest to goodness tie, this is no small task.
There have been a few threads about this topic.
Give a search on CG talk for some detailed discussions on the topic.
Here is one that I put my two cents in a while back:
