Rigging Script Order of Operation

#1

I’m creating the second version of a 3D character and I’m looking for any and all ways to make it better.

Generally speaking, is it better to organize your rigging script ‘section by section’ or ‘operation by operation’?

For example: do ALL spine rigging, then ALL leg rigging, etc. or setup ALL the controls then add ALL the constraints etc.

The first option makes more sense to me but I wanted a pro (or two’s) opinion.

Thanks,

Personally I like to try to make the rig script modular

it really depends on your workflow. “do it all” rigging systems usually lack one thing - manual interruption. it’s cool when a script just creates whole biped setup, but what if your client wants something different for the legs or additional features for arms? you gotta change the script.

So yeah, in general, the better choice would be, as you call it, “do all spine rigging”, "do all leg " etc. You polish these modules over time, adding new features, making them universal and customizable, and independed of each other - thats when it becomes more reusable in your future rigs.

i would also recommend starting with body part groups. and when you notice there are multiple modules requiring the same scripts you generalize your old module-script and put it on a “higher” level, which the modules are inheriting, or importing.
