Rigging a Lego minifigure in Maya

Hi all,

I’ve got this Lego minifigure I’m trying to rig in Maya. I’ve got the skeleton down ok and I’ve joined it to the mesh using the smooth bind tool. The problem is, whenever I try out the joints, I get distortion on other parts of the model. For example, when I try to move the arms, parts of the head move along as well

And when moving the legs, the bottom of the torso moves along with it.

This is my first time trying to rig anything in Maya, so I’m pretty new to all this. Is there something I can do to fix this?

any help is appreciated!

It’s a weights problem. Every vertex can have multiple joints that influence it. So vertex can be influenced by the knee for 20 percent and 80 percent by the hip for example. You can fix this by painting the weights. There are plenty of tutorials doing that. Just google weights painting and you will find how to fix it.
