reversing a stereogram

Does there exist software that can extract a zbuffer from a given stereo pair, either in red-blue format or two separate images?

I have a primitive method in mind using Photoshop and the “difference” layer mode, but it involves some heavy filtering. I’m trying to figure out how to digitize heightfields, like the relief on a coin, so I can turn them into accurate bumpmaps.

An artist posted a tutorial on Discreet’s forum awhile back about how to scan a coin with different sets of lighting, to extract a dot-product3 normal map. Here is a zip with all the assets. This is normal mapping though, not height. Heightfields are more difficult to get from photographs.

You might try EPHERE 3D.
