request: painting metal tutorial

#1

[i]All right, I need some serious help. I’m trying to work on my Exotique piece, and I’m stuck on the shiney metal parts of my figure’s armor. I’ve always faked metal textures before, and they never turned out quite right.

I’ve tried studying photo references of metallic objects, but it’s just not helping me. I’ve always had a problem making the transition from seeing something to getting it right.

So, does anyone know of tips/tutorials/guides on how to paint shiney metal surfaces that DOESN’T involve relying on Photoshop filters. I don’t overly care what 2D program the tutorial is for, I can figure that part out if I just have something explaining the concepts i’m clearly not understanding on my own.

Thanks.

ingenious use of the dodge tool set to “highlight” can work wonders for the shine on metal, as well as the burn tool.

EDIT:

if it’s PAINTED metal, i recommend adding silver scratches and chips (with tiny hard round brush and a white or grey color set at an opacity of…30 percent?) to bring the effect home.
