renderman shader writing practice

#1

Is there anyway that I can practice writing renderman shaders out there for free? It seems like there is no free trial, no ple version of renderman, and all i want is to educate myself with the books that ive bought, on how to write shaders renderman.

Is there a way?

Agree with Gravedigger. 3Delight for Maya is probably the better option to learn as it’s well-integrated with Maya and free (2 threads is enough to get you started). And as much fun as it is to edit rib files manually - you’ll probably have a much better time lighting and shading models in Maya.

Yes, just to repeat what others have said - use 3delight for Maya. The rendering core is robust (and similar to PRMan) and the maya plugin is free. Plus it even supports some useful mental ray shaders (besides all the regular maya Hypershade nodes which can be handy if you want to learn how a particular shading model is translated into rsl).

You probably know about www.fundza.com. Try the RSL editor Cutter by Malcolm Kesson. And sign up at the 3delight forums. Lots of helpful topics and people there.

All the best.
