"Render to texture" normal map help

#1

Hi guys, hope this post falls in the right category.

I’m currently having trouble getting my normal maps to turn out correctly. I’m using projection mapping render to texture in 3ds max 2011 to render them out and I keep getting these weird streaks and lines all over the normals. Some of the areas have box shapes and weird straight lines which I thought was from another UV channel, but doesn’t seem like it. Take a look at the images below.

I did some tests with a simpler object like making a dice and the normals came out smooth. I’ve never encounter this problem before and it usually works fine. I’ve playing around with different settings in the render to texture options, loaded it in a new max file, even tried switching to max 2010.

Anybody have any solutions to this?? Thanks.

The object is a lamppost and what you see is just one of the pieces.

I just did a test and created a piece I already had that was part of the model. I’m getting somewhat different results and finally all those weird shape lines are gone, but there are still some black edges around the normals. Anyone have any idea? I left most of the settings to default in the Render to texture menu.
