Render Passes and Linear workflow

#1

Hopefully you guys can help me out with a problem I’ve been having.

I’ve set up a Linear workflow ( I think ) using the color management feature in mental rays options, and changed the render views display to linear also. I set up my passes, however I seem to have run into two problems. The first one is, my passes are coming out much darker then they should be. The batched rendered beauty pass looks nothing like the rendered picture in the render viewer. It’s way too dark, leading me to believe that the image is no longer linear. If I save the render straight from the render viewer, the image looks as it should.

A second, related problem I’ve been having is my iff and tiff files batched rendered from maya show up blank when loaded into photoshop. The beauty pass works, but the diffuse, spec, etc, show up blank.

I think we need to know more about your linear workflow setup. Are you using a lens shader like the photographic or simple ones? They will be ignored by passes. When you save from the renderview there is a setting in the options box to save the actual render or the ‘colour managed’ render, perhaps you are saving the colour managed render.

Are you de-gamma-ing your textures? What are your colour management settings all set to? It can certainly get confusing.

I haven’t applied a lens shader or gamma corrected my textures. I was under the impression that choosing linear for the default output profile in the color management feature automated this process for you. My default input profile is set to sRGB. Instead of using a lens shader, I did display>color management in the renderView and switched the Image color profile to Linear, which as far as I can tell, does the same thing as using a lens shader.

I believe that you are right about saving the color managed picture and not the actual render when saving from the renderView.
