Render manager recommendations?

Since I’m running into more and more problems with backburner I am thinking about switching to another render manager for my little render farm (5 clients) which can handle 3dmax (vray) and Maya (vray) jobs and maybe AfterEffects and Nuke.

I worked at some studios with Deadline and Royal Render which I liked, but the licenses are pretty expensive for a small shop like mine, so I would like to avoid them if possible.

Does anybody have a recommendation?

My only complaint with Deadline was that it doesn’t scale well to hundreds (or thousands) of machines but that’s not a factor in this case. If you’re looking for something free look at Afanasy.

Afanasy looks ugly as hell, but it seems to be pretty solid. I will give it a try, thank you olson.

I tried Smedge and Deadline and Deadline was the only one to work reliably in my experience.
