Remove the grainy background already?

#1

There aren’t any words to express how unnatural, annoying and needless it is, it’s been mentioned so many times how hard is it to get rid of it by now.

#2

How is grain unnatural, but solid grey isn’t?

#3

I mean unnatural in its effect on the eyes, it’s very noisy and generally disruptive. There have been several complaints about it, it’s easy to remove and definitely won’t make it any worse.

Do it for pity’s sake at least if not to adhere to basic design.

Well yes, noise does tend to be noisy :stuck_out_tongue:

I really don’t mind it. From my perspective, its disruptive level (whatever that is) is largely down to personal preference. A small amount of texture to the page stops Cgtalk looking like the world’s most boring, flat, grey forum. And it’s not against basic design principles. This kind of page is what’s against basic design principles. Let’s keep things in their proper perspective.

I’m not saying your suggestion is out of place. That’s cool. It’s just the attitude of the request that seems off. There’s basic design, and then there are the fifty million little things designers argue about all day long. This is one of them.

Maybe some good ol’ CSS choices for everyone would keep people happy?

I’m fairly sure noisy backgrounds that cause the eyes to be distracted from the main content, especially when reading, is on the unofficial don’t-do list of website design.

Has anyone complained about the flat dark grey background? No. Have people complained about the noise background? Yes.

Choice is obvious. The attitude of the post stems from the previous discussion on the matter, which was largely ignored. I don’t think complaints from the people you’ve built the website for should be ignored, especially not when it comes to just changing the background slightly which would take about 5 seconds.

Alas, if you’ve got adblock you can block the background image, the rest will have to suffer I suppose.

As I mentioned before, it’s a debatable thing. A slight light-grey noise is hardly what I’d call distracting.

Has anyone complained about the flat dark grey background? No. Have people complained about the noise background? Yes.

Yes, well put, but…

I don’t think complaints from the people you’ve built the website for should be ignored, especially not when it comes to just changing the background slightly which would take about 5 seconds.

This is a suggestions forum. Not a ‘do as I say’ forum. I don’t think you or I are paying Cgtalk for the site, so at the end of the day, if the suggestions aren’t acted upon, we live with whatever parts we don’t like.

The long story short is- yes, it’d be nice if there were options for those who don’t like the noise. But, a suggestion is what it is.

Why do I get the feeling nobody even scrolls down to the suggestions, so where’s the “hold website for ransom and make demands” section? :stuck_out_tongue:

#8

It is a bit hidden and out of the way, isn’t it?

#9

It’s out of the way for a reason  If you hide your suggestions forums you get a higher quality suggestion, because people really want to suggest it (this doesn’t mean we agree with them all) - with the suggestions easier to access, people post all sorts of random stuff there, and we have to read through it all. It’s psychological more than anything.

There’s little chance of seeing the noise fall away, it’s very faint if you’ve got your monitor setup right, and I find the white-space it helps create makes it easier to focus on the text-body, and frankly anything is better than that hideous red gradient.

#10

I did wonder if that was the reason you had it all the way out here.

About the noise- it is possible to give users an option to turn it off? I have my monitor set up right and so it really doesn’t bug me at all, but I can certainly see the side of those who prefer the clean/flat look.
