Remapping video in combustion

#1

i’m a long time AfterEffects user who is just beginning to work with Combustion. Question: how do I re-map the video timing in Combustion? I know RealViz makes a plug-in (Retimer) that can do this and probably do it very well. However, I have been looking through the manual and have not found the best way to do this without retimer. Just a hint where in the manual and I’ll be happy to dig it out myself.

That feature is new to Combustion 4.

You can’t time-remap in any version less, you can only adjust the overall speed or duration of the clip.

I feel less foolish having been unable to find that feature in 3. I’ll definitely upgrade for that capability.

If I may ask, can you advise whether there is any frame blending function in 3 that allows you to stretch clips and interpolate between frames? I really am not a big fan of that feature in AE because it adds too much “ghosting”. However, in some footage the blending does cover up the loss of frame rate. Thanks for your assistance.

On this page there is a video demo of the feature, and yes I believe it shows the demonstrator using pixel blending.

This feature is in Combustion3 also (I think it’s in all versions)
you can find from footage controls -> Output -> just under Time Stretch - controls

If you want to smooth out the motion of time remapping then you want to look at a plugin like Realviz Retimer, Reelsmart Twixtor or The Foundry Furnace(Kronos).

For time remapping in combustion 3 Jamination ofer a plugin called Jam retimer which is free. It is similar to the way combustion 4 implements retiming (ie it does not usemotion tracking to create entirely new frames like some of the commercial plugins) but instead blends frames on either side.

Looks like they took the installation files off of their site (the links return 404 errors).
Anyone happen to know where else to find that one? I definitely wouldn’t mind adding some simple remapping capabilities to my copy of Combustion (won’t be upgrading for quite some time…).

If you look hard enough a working link is there: http://www.jamination.com/temp/combustion%20dev/jamretimer142.zip

Ahh… didn’t notice the ‘4’ missing from their links. Thanks, Pixel_Monkey.
Time to go play with the plugin.

A word of caution about the Jamination Retimer… I could not get it to work consistently. What would happen was that it would work when I added it, but then, upon opening up the file again at a later time, it would cause errors and I’d have to remove the node and add a new one. Eventually I abandoned it entirely. This was mentioned to me before I downloaded it, that it may not be entirely stable… but I was never able to get it to work reliably.

HOWEVER! It has come to my attention as I write this that when I was using it, my system was in the process of slowly dying anyhow due to (probably) a bad windows install. When I reinstalled, I also re-patched Combustion and I was unable to remember if I had patched Combustion when I got it in the first place. Sooooooo, it may have been due to either my declining system health, or an unpatched Combustion and the plugin only working after a certain patch. To these things, I can offer no proofs and I have not had an occasion to retry the plugin since my reinstall.

Bottom line is, backup all your files before using it and do some tests to insure it will not corrupt any of your files. If it works, it’s awesome, and I really appreciate Jamination making the plugin available. I simply offer a word of warning.

[edit] A little update: Shortly after posting this I found I did need to use this plugin again if possible. I downloaded from the link in this thread but alas, it doesn’t seem to work period now. I’m using version 3.0.4, which is the latest patch. I get a fatal error every time I try to add the plugin to a workspace now. :frowning: Anyone else still using Jamination under version 3.0.4 and having it work? That patch is only a few months old so my guess is it might have broken some of the code for Jamination. I’m pretty darned sure it’s not an install problem on my part, I tried it multiple times.
