Referenced rig in 3ds max

#1

Hi everyones !

I was wandering if there is any way to import a character as a external reference in 3ds max 2012.

I have my character rigged alone in a scene (ready to rock with his shader and every thing) and i want to animate him in several other scene (one per shot). An still be able to modify it in his original scene.
I know it is very very simple to do it in maya with the referencing system but the bad news is i’m working with 3ds ! So does anybody know how to do it ? Plug-in or anything ?
I buy a beer to the guy who find me the solution ! (If he comes to Paris ;))

You should try Xrefs.

Thanks for replying !
Xref work fine for the environment but for the character i need to be able to move the controllers and not the whole body, it’s not possible with the Xref (or i don’t know how).

You can save and load characters assemblies, but I’m not sure if it’s possible to reference to external files. Containers might be worth a try but I heard only bad things about them.

I’v just found the solution !
Just need to check “merge transform” with Xref object !
scrimski thanks for your help !

Interesting - are you able to skin to referenced joints? I remember trying this ages ago and although I could xref a skeleton in I could not skin anything to it…

What i have is a skeleton with a mesh skinned on it, and all that, referenced in an other scene.
I don’t skin on a referenced skeleton, but it might be possible, worth a try.
