Recommendations on achieving this effect

I need to make a video for a job interview and I would realllllly like to copy the style of a video I have seen in a Cal football promo.

The main thing I want to have happen is the image to words to image effect. Do I just have to meticulously add lots of text layers or is there some easier way to do this?

Trapcode form is probably what you want for that effect. You can use the text as particles, and the image as a color/alpha map for form.
