Here are a couple of matte paintings I’ve been working on. The first on is for a short film called “En Route” The second one is my final project for my Matte Painting class. Its sort of done. I made so many design changes over the course of working on it that I got frustrated and took most of the original elements out. I may finish finish it someday, But I’m fairly happy with the composition

You know we all disliked you while you worked on that matte painting. I still like how it turned out though.

Lets go in order though, the first painting… Well the perspective is wrong. The truck in the foremost ground is the part that really doesn’t fit. I am guessing the trucks and plane are one entire element? I would say scoot it(technical term that one) to the right. Also, this is nitpicking, but the sun is in the wrong spot to where the highlight is on the plane and its cast shadow on the mechanical thing(boarding arm? what is that called?). Otherwise the elements themselves look well integrated.

Now for your final… That darn thing. Well I honestly do love it, compositionaly, and elements. Few things, well the first is a question. The god ray, on your banz-… tree, wouldn’t that extend up to the lens flare? From the look of it it stops abruptly at the middle arch. The strong highlight looks too short, it should extend higher for where your sun is. Some of the shadows around the entire composition are too strong(especially in the cracks along the right wall). The wall on the far left closest to viewer, has the wrong shadow color. And I personally I think it and the wall next to it are too dark for the entire composition. No where in your image, does it ever go to total blackness, and for how much light bouncing is happening it should atleast be lit by a red reflected light.

Gotta love that UFO.

The one with the plane is pretty cool, nice composition, if a little out of frame, cant quite tell if the plane is photography or 3d? minor critique that the background is a little too flat and painty.

The second painting has a number of scale and perspective issues and the balance between paint and photography is a little distant. By that i mean some areas look very painty while others look very photographic …

Thanks,
I never actually finished the Airport one, but the director said it was fine and told me to stop working on it. Its difficult to find large photos of Airplanes docked at boarding ramps, at a specified time of day.

The canyon one, to be honest, I just got tired of it. I changed the concept so many times, that I never really captured my vision. I will continue to work it though, eventually…

I love the first one, except for a very few painterlly effects on the background, I guess it should work. The second is nice too. Same thing though, very painterlly on some areas and realistic on the other parts, (especially the tree). Aside from that great work!
