Hmmmm now when you pointed it out … you are right :scream: and I thought its finished … . I’am not so sure now … well I’ll let it as it is for now and I may try something tomorrow … ehmm may be … frankly it took me a half hour to color it and i didn’t follow reference much … guess it was a mistake :argh: …

i attatched them, maybe that will fix the problem…

Jinnseng -

No problem with the compliments, it was a really good piece you did. Now for the questions:

??? Resat! ??? Bleed! - what are these? What do they do? Where are they located? Will “bleed” make my work appear not so ‘streaky’ to look at in Corel? 3 weeks you say you have been playing with this software…

Blending - I’ve played with the blend tool, but I have heard rumours that there are tricks you can play with the brushes to achieve this. This also applies to Photoshop too…

Any ideas how to do this “trick” with the brushes??? (in both PS and Painter.)

any advice would be greatly recieved. Thx.

Slux,

Awesome, thank you for telling us about yourself! Well, I took a foreign language it will not be mentioned since I don’t speak it well but I’m always amazed at you multi-lingual Europeans! Anyway, best of luck as you start art school, and Wow, considering that you’re producing drawings like this after only 6 months, I’m sure you will do incredibly well in school! As you go through your program, please feel free to post your work in the other threads on this forum, it will be exciting to see your progress!

yulias,

Thank you for reposting these, now I can see your attachments. I particularly like your second page, and I think that the shading which you’ve done is especially nice on this sheet. Good work, and thank you for posting these!

default.rol,

Yep, I would be interested in the answers, too!

Here’s a link from Lunatiques website that explains the resaturation/bleed settings on brushes. I don’t think he would mind.

You very well can acheive blending in painter without the use of blending tools, but sometimes it’s just easier to do it with them. The way I do it with brushes in both painter and photoshop is to build up opacity. But I’m really no expert on this, i’m still learning myself. You should check out the Art Techniques and Theories forum, there are a lot of GREAT tips in there.

#286

Thx Jinnseng - relevant links have been bookmarked. Opening Corel now…

Now I just have to find out how do blend in PS on the art techniques and theories forum…

#287

here’s my latest skull

I guess Rebecca’s a good teacher after all
I did this from scratch following rebeccas’s mini tutorial.
I didn’t bother much with the details because I didn’t want to spend more than 2 hours on this. Also, I tried to follow the shading rules and gradually I smoothed over all the sketch lines.

So, any comments are welcome

Pixelfloss -

This is loads better for that 3 dimensional feel. You should just go back and look at the jaw section again. Its really 2 dimensional in comparison to the rest of the head.

Great job otherwise though! Well done.

#289

PixelFloss,

Good lord that’s an amazing improvement! Wow, thanks for posting this ~ I don’t know if I did a really bad job with the first shading tutorial or a really good job with the second, but who cares, this rocks!!!

Awesome job, I can’t wait to see more work!!

@El-Rodente
Love the avatar

@Interfacer
Yes!!!
I knew we had a Parietal bone somewhere

@Squibbit
But he’s winking! I swear I saw him wink.

@Slux
That looks nice. Hyper-Real even.

Hi again Rebecca,

Funny I was using the
Additive>Subtractive>Additive>Subtractive technique just like that.
I’m also following your other tips.

This is a re-post, hope it’s not spamming.
Maybe you can see it now? It’s a small file anyway.
I’d love to get your crit.
Really getting into digital illustration now.

I went not so much for hyper-real but more for a clean gouache style.
I stuck with small brushes also.
The sort of thing you see in comic book covers as you grow up?
Any improvement suggestions most appreciated, I am off on something else today though.

Spin99,

It’s looking pretty good there! My suggestion would be to keep all of the SHADING Layers that you have, and, if they are all beneath a separate linework Layer, as I suspect they are, Copy Merge them and then BLUR the Merged Shading Layer. I think you ought to try to BLEND your shading more, instead of going for a half~cross hatched effect ~ cross hatching seems more effective with pencil / pen / paper, and is really not necessary in Photoshop, unless that is REALLY the effect you want, in which case you would need to take the cross~hatching a lot further.

So, the long and short of my suggestion is:
1. Blur a Copy Merged Layer of the Shading Layers, keeping the linework on top as a separate Layer.
2. Clean up the blurred Copy Merged Layer of the Shading Layers, and then go back in to add more details / Lights / Darks / Midtones.
3. Gradually remove the Linework Layer.

~Good luck, and definitely post your results!

default.rol,
yes, yes I see what you mean. I was so excited to post it that I totally ignored the jaw :).

Rrebecca,
Well, you did good job with both tutorials, the second being complementary to the first.
Presenting the same subject (shading) from different perspectives was the most helpful.
Anyway, thanks for the comments. I hope I’ll get the hang of it drawing some more eh… skulls till tommorrow.

#293

PixelFloss,

Thanks! Yep, it’s helpful to me to know what works best, and you’re absolutely right that showing 2 approaches to the same problem is helpful. I know there are certain concepts and approaches in digital / traditional drawing / painting that just will never make sense to me, so I tend to stick to what I know / can comprehend in my own way. So I’m really happy you asked your initial question, because I think it will end up helping other folks as well :). Now I know why ‘teachers’ beg their ‘students’ to participate, because it really does contribute a LOT to the dialogue that happens in a class. So any questions people have, please ask away!

Hi everyone
Well I said it was finished but after jmBoekestein pointed out it looks quite flat I thought I will give it another try. At first I didn’t really noticed it was flat because I was quite happy how it turned out but now I see it wasn’t that good. Well I’am still beginner so I learn from mistakes :D. Hmm there is my try to create a little more depth. I dunno what you guys think? does it look better? …

I’am glad you like it  You seem to be improving too …

And here is previous version for comparsion

Slux continues to impress me

Good call by jmBoekestein, I guess I’ve been evaluating mostly on the merit of individual pictures without comparing to the originals as much as I should have…

Ok, folks, feel free to jump in here: I’ve shown here the original Reference photo (desaturated) side by side with a desaturated version of Slux’s latest submission: please post your comments and crits!

#296

Well I see there is a lot of small details I miss in my piece … but it would took probably quite long to create it and I’am not even sure how would I do it … may be with some special brushes with different patterns … who knows

#297

Slux,

You might want to try this:

Create a Layer above your Original Layer (I always Name Layers to keep them straight) and call it “textures” or something you can easily identify.

Use a textured brush such as the one in the example (really, you can use any brush, I would just experiment and play with different brushes to see what you like best) and create your own textures on the “textures” Layer.

Set the Layer’s Blending Mode to something you like ~ Hard Light, Screen, Overlay ~ these always come up with interesting results, but it all depends on what you’ve got on your Layers ~ hint Shift + = toggles through the Blending Modes.

[left]Hope this helps ~ experiment a bit, and post your final results!

#298

Are we still on btw?

I want to do another one today.

#299

Go for it! Seeing as how your first skull rocked I can only imagine that this one will be better! Yep, depending on how things go, I’m thinking of extending this through another few days or even a week. I think people are really learning a LOT from all the great work that’s being posted, and I want to give folks a chance to redo / repost their work as new tutorials have been added and more work has been posted.

What do you guys think? Shading can never be boring after all…it’s the crux of what 2D artists do!

I completely agree, I heard once that even the greatb masters were first taught to do values right in greyscale. It trains the eye, with less worries.

I’ll do steps in my work and try and make a legible tutorial, I work real shoddly though, so you’ll have to excuse any missing steps, lol.
