Realtime Modeling Demos

#1

The type of tutorial that helps me more than anything else is the “realtime” modeling video. I could bang my head against a wall for a week trying to figure out the most efficient way to model something - or watch one realtime modeling video of a similar item and instantly comprehend everything that was done.

It’d be really great to see procedural recordings of different types of models (like the handful of sample objects included with the application) being created. I know there often are a lot of different ways to accomplish the same geometry - but it sure does smooth out the learning curve and help to light up that “ohhhh yeahhhhh, now I get it!” bulb a lot more quickly when I simply watch somebody do something.

Same here. I’m sure they’re coming, but just not fast enough :stuck_out_tongue:

What do ex-lightwave users think about using lightwave tutes for modo?

Still waiting for the box to be delivered here. I’m new to polygons & SDS modeling. i Always do NURBS modeling with CAD softwares so i really don’t have the basic of polygons modeling and it’s tools. Now i’m finding hard to learn Modo without specific tutorials for Modo, i’ve been trying some LW tutorials but it’s still hard for me to look for the tools in Modo as shown in the LW tutorial.
You know any where to get the Modo tutorials which is really basic.
Lux delays my order because they having problem with UPS. Can’t wait to see those video tutorials on DVD.

Hi,
This is where I learnt head modeling.

I think the toturial should be apply to modo, although we don’t have smart hightlighting:).

Cheers.

they would work very good. dìfor head anc char modelling u can have different dvd and different solutions right now

  1. Todd grimes dvd set- good char modelling and rigging tuts on 5 DVD - cartoon - incredibles kinda style.

  2. Carnera’s character modelling dvd - here u have a more realistic character, from head to body and clothes modelling. u have to know better Lw (or modo)toolset to have a real advantage from this DVD though.

both tuts use box modelling techniques.

there’s also a good written tut on head modelling with poly to poly technique (using some kinda edge extruding in modo, called edge extender in Lw) in dan ablan’s inside Lw 7 book.

u can search for the links of DVD sets in www.flay.com wich is a great reference site for lw artists and 3d artists in general.

also u may want to search on these forums for Userdelta’s spinshift tutorials on how to model realistic heads in box modelling.

there are other tuts on the web, but hope this is a good startpoint for non lw users.

I dunno - I’ve seen a number of lightwave modeling realtimes, and they certainly helped with lightwave’s modeler… but I don’t want to just keep emulating Modeler with Modo - if I were going to do that, it would be faster to work in Modeler. I want to learn to use Modo the way it was designed to be used - quickly and efficiently.

I’ve already run into several tutorials on the Modo DVD that took really time-consuming “basic” processes from Modeler and did them in a matter of a few steps. That’s what I want to get a feel for.

Like I said, just seeing how the models on the DVD were assembled would have given me a huge head start.

Don’t want to be harsh : time consuming?

For organics Lw modeler is one of the fastest modeler even without edges and n gons
and for your information, with box modelling you could model a good (and i mean relistic)head in a matter of 1- 2 hours, but if u’re very talented and quick also less time.

However, there are other great tuts on the web using different systems. the tut on Ablan’s book explains well how to model one head with poly to poly method wich is similar to use create poly and append, plus extruding edges, cutting them and so on. This is another good method, used even by Pisong and other artists so even if the tut is written i’d take the occasion to give it a look.

Modo is written to work in several ways, but the best thing to do is to find your way to accomplish things. sure you coud use modeler as well, u’re no wrong. but when it comes the need to model inorganic stuff u will find a good companion in edges and ngonsLw doesn’t have so far. u also could model in different ways using a box method splitting it with edge slice and remove, spin edge and more. in this case, since there aren’t great movie tuts in particular for Modo , u may search for some Maya tuts or max ones.

No offense, but who models heads all the time? 95% of what I do is “things” - I’m not a character modeler except for my own enjoyment. There are a zillion head modeling tutorials, and they’re great - but they’re not what I’m talking about. If I want to model heads and cars with the most basic toolsets in any modeler, I’m all set.

I know that there are lots of ways to accomplish different types of models, and that’s precisely what I’m talking about… I would like to see them demonstrated so that I can either use them myself, or recognize inefficiencies in my own technique. Presumably, if you’re an expert who has developed their own techniques for doing everything, then you don’t need this sort of thing - so why would you comment?

Well, i think in modo u have quite the same tools you can find in Lw modeler, and some Maya too. so, basically the techniques u will adopt to model inorganic or other elements will come from these 2 kinda approaches there is also the possibility to snap to grid or geometry, and to use the workplane to orient the direction in wich you apply tools and move elements.

Some realtime demos will come in near future, but considering Modo toolset the best it has is workflow.

maybe i concentrated my posts on organic stuff, wich i like the most  but since someone asked if lw tuts could be of help for modo users i replied to the question.

Modo has surely a great Lw inheritance : example :smooth shift = extrude faces in Maya. it’s actually an extrude command for items u selected, but it’s name is smooth shift in default UI, because in Lw it’s called like that.also it works both in a Lw way, and similar to Maya way if u use manipulators. fallofs also come from Lw toolset. example : bend tool in Lw is some kinda rotate tool with linear falloff applied.

Users that don’t know Lw, may find some problem though and some Modo related tip and trick can be surely helpful. That’s why i’m all for good modelling tuts on dvd or other movie. format.
