REALLY simple open source 3d app?

#1

One of my programming goals is to make a program similar to anim8or using c++

but anim8or is not open source and even if it was, I think it would be too complex for me right now =)

so I’m wondering, does anyone know of some really simple open source 3d apps that will do like really basic modeling and mabye even .3ds exporting. I don’t mean wings because its not c++ hehe. I need something to try and learn from.

Aztec - Windows based. I’ve actually “tried” to contribute to this project but dropped out due to lack of skills on my part.

Here are some blatantly obvious ones that are not hard to find:

Wings3D

Blender

basically go to any Linux software website like tucows or freshmeat and do a search for “3d modeler” and you’ll hit the jackpot.

vertizor thanks for the aztec link!! This is the kinda stuff I was looking for. however, like I said, wings wont work, and blender either, those are still on the complex side. I’m not that good enough to understand the code yet.

How much programming experience do you have? Do you have a good understanding of some of the graphical API’s?

K-3D - http://k3d.sourceforge.net/new/

Perhaps not a simple package but its a modeling and animation system completely open-source. Could be something to start with.

Writing your own app is definitly the best way to understand the math and fundamentals of a 3D animation system (at least it was for me)!

Good Luck!

what did you make?? I have a friend who made a 3d engine called T3D its pretty cool but its still above me. I’m no 1337 c0d3r thats for sure

I would highly recommend joining the Blender mailing list. Blender is complicated, but if you break it into chunks or just focus on a particular area it becomes much easier to digest. Download the source code, play with it, then ask questions, either on the mailing list or irc.

Blender is unique in that it is quite sophisticated and a true open source project. Spending a year working with the source code and experimenting is the equivalent of 2 semesters of a computer graphics course imo.

@Critterslayer

Have a look at this page http://members.net-tech.com.au/alaneb/freeworld_tutorial.html
This + all the OpenGL pages on the same site should help starting you up

Hope this help

holy crap that is AWESOME and it was made using dev-cpp which i love! this looks to be almost too good to be true!! thanks! how did you find this anyway?

Wow that is good news!!. :bounce:

I found this little gold mine a few months ago while researching good ref. on the Win 32 API for my current spare time development - an extension/plugin for my favorite 3D Engine “Quest 3D”.

Glad you like it.

Keep us up to date with your progress!!

Cheers!!
