Realistic helmet strap?

#1

Been trying to create a helmet strap for a few days now, and I just cannot get it to look right. Basically I have create a simple base mesh in 3ds Max, and then imported it into Mudbox for the details. I then imported the mudbox model to 3ds Max to keep some of the details that were new in my Mudbox revision.

As you may see, the cheek strap is what I need help with in the first place. It doesn’t look like a strap, but more like clay of some sort. The UVW’s are correct and everything, but how am I supposed to get a strap-like texture? I tried to sculpt it myself, but it really doesn’t look any good… (as seen in the image).

But I also feel that the shape of the strap doesn’t look realistic either. Is there a good technique on how to make straps the correct way? Seeing as straps in general bend much here and there.

Here’s what it looks like in the viewport without the details:

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

I think maybe you can make it less thick and add some details like on this picture :

As you can see there is a wrapped fabric around the edges of the strap which unfold once the seam is passed.

You can also had this kind of squarish at the end of the strap, there often is some to strengthen the sewing.
