Raziel Revisited

#1

Hi all,

A little side project I’m working on, I thought it would be fun to share my own take on Raziel from the Soul Reaver: Legacy of Kain series!

I’ve pretty much finished the sculpt, but I’ve included a bit of the wip process to show that:

For those of you that don’t know Raziel, here’s some pics of the original look from the game:

My thoughts were to revisit him, not just sculpt what was there, but do him in a new style. I changed a bit of the design, gave him pants based on some images of what he looked like as a vampire before turning into a wraith, made his shredded wings look a little more like wings and less like 2 pieces of blue cloth, and a few other things.

It was a tricky decision as to what to keep and what to change. The original design is a bit dated, but he should still look like he’s the same guy. I’d be interested to hear what you guys think of the direction I took him.

And here’s the sculpt as it sits now:

Full size

For process, so far he’s done almost entirely in ZBrush. I started with a rough basemesh, and sculpted very roughly his basic form using dynamesh for topology. I refined and refined, and when I would get a section to a certain stage I’d do one of 2 techniques:

  1. ZRemesher to fairly low, subdivide a couple times then reproject the detail back on to the better-topology mesh, then keep working and adding detail. All his flesh was done this way

  2. Retopology brush to rebuild very clean geometry, then use crease to get hard edges before subdividing. Pretty much all his clothes were done this way.

His cowl was a bit different, I’ll go into detail about that in a future post. I think it would be good to “tutorialize” that bit, since it’s not a normal process!

My plan is to make a real-time model out of him, rigged and textured, with physically accurate shaders (or at least as physically accurate as a vampire-turned-wraith can look!)

Really cool! those were some of my favorite games!

I think it looks awesome so far, maybe some exposed bone and ligament might look cool too. veins and muscle striations could be could work as well.

keep up the good work!

Took a small break from this due to some family issues, but here is finally the next step, the fully baked model.

Also done but not really apparent is I’ve separated out all the material types for my texturing and material pass. Normally a pretty easy stage, but those stitches made it pretty time consuming. Need to find a quicker way to do something like that. Perhaps if I had made them with an insert mesh brush instead of a custom alpha I could’ve masked it off much easier. Oh well, the purpose of this is to iron out a better workflow for more important models, this one’s just for fun.

This looks really good!
Reminds me of Death in Darksiders which is about my favorite style. Looking forward to seeing what you will do with him.

Cheers

Apparently Death’s design was inspired by Raziel
