Razer Blade Pro for CG Artists?

#1

I came across this laptop: http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-systems/razer-blade-pro/
a couple of months ago and have been following recent reviews. Noteworthy to its design is the physical similarity to the MacBook Pro, and LCD touch pad with configurable hotkeys. It’s one of the most powerful off-the-shelf laptops I have come across, featuring an SSD i7 drive, 8gb memory, Nvidia GForce GTX 765m gpu and runs on Windows 8. Reviews have been great for gaming, and the benchmark tests put it at the top of performance.

Has anyone used this platform with industry standard tools like zBrush, Max, Maya, Unreal Engine?

Any thoughts on the investment (~$2500)?

Any other laptops to recommend?

My personal weapon right now is a Lenovo Y-500 Ideapad with Intel Core i7, two Nvidia GT650M’s in SLI configuration with 16 GB RAM and a 1TB HDD and the standard built-in camera (for video reference yay!).

It’s a LOT cheaper than a Razerblade or the Alienware equivalent and so far does the job, both CPU/GPU rendering and you can play many recent games on Ultra without it getting too hot.

Lenovo build quality is very good (so far).

But I only use Blender.

Note: Windows 8 is standard for this unit.

You can get a lot cheaper laptops with better hardware, but then you trade off for size (others are super thick and heavy). So it would depend on whether you would trade some of the portability for a lower cost and more speed.

I had one of the Razer keyboards with the touch screen and programmable buttons-I wouldn’t waste money for that feature, it doesn’t really work that well.

MSI just released a new laptop that has the same processor, same GPU, but more RAM and more hard drive space. And all for a much lower cost:

And it’s actually lighter and thinner than the Razer Blade Pro
