Raspberry Madness, Tuna Unalan (3D)

Title: Raspberry Madness

Name: Tuna Unalan

Country: United States

Software: Maya ZBrush MARI VRay Nuke Photoshop

Submitted: 30th March 2015

This project started as an exploration of SSS shader in V-Ray. Eventually I was inspired by food photography and decided to put together a scene. I also ran into Lukasz Sztukowski’s Ice Cream Cake on CG Society as I was doing my search. He is one of my inspiration sources. I think raspberries are a spectacular looking fruit because of their eye catching, deep, warm color. They are also challenging to make in 3D. Even though they can be pushed towards realism more, I am happy with how they turned out so far.

Update: I have revised this project upon critiques I received. Mainly the models have been improved overall and fixed a few shaders/textures.

Awesome work! how much time did it take?

Thanks! I spent about a week just playing around doing R&D, modeling and figuring out a good composition. For another week, I was in Maya; lighting, shading, doing look dev. and rendering. At the end, I spent 2 days color correcting and doing other post work in Nuke. Pretty laid back schedule for the most part.

This is really, really nice! Great job all round.

Because it’s so good, I’m going to crit a couple of things I noticed that are absolutely teeny-tiny, but leapt out to me

The little ‘balls’ on the edges of the chocolate chunks and scattered on the table - it’s not 100% clear what these are. The ones on the table are fine because they just look like sprinkles, or crumbs of cocoa powder, but where they sit on the edges of the chocolate chunks they look like bubbles/defects in the chocolate itself, which isn’t very appealing.

The texture and shader on the blueberries is really nice but I would expect one or two of them to show the tell-tale ‘star’ shape that blueberries have on top. It’s not a big deal but in real life it would be strange if all of those blueberries were upside down

Finally (and this is mega, mega, insane nit-picking) the separate chunks of chocolate appear to have a slightly different profile to the pieces that are still attached. The decal on top also appears to be a slightly different scale.

Like I said, teen-tiny, totally insignificant things, but since you clearly have a good eye for detail, I thought it would be remiss of me not to mention them.

I love reading critiques so thank you for this! You really did catch a lot of small flaws, which happens… Added to my “Fix it” list.

My mouth got wet just by looking at berries. Jummmy.

Can I ask you, how did you get such a convincing berry model ?

Thank you! It took me a few tries to finally settle on a raspberry model, even though it’s still not quite right. I basically picked a raspberry picture that I found on the internet and put it in to Zbrush as my background. Then I started placing spheres together to create the over all shape by looking at the reference. I am trying to make the models more unique and break the overall repetition so I’d advise the same to you if you want to model your own.

Just seen your update, fantastic work.

I hope I was able to fix things that you pointed out as well. Thanks for your critique again.

Looks great. There are only two things which stands out for me from the overall excellence:

  1. The wooden board has a CG look. I’m not sure whether it’s due to the texture resolution or too uniform bump and specular.
  2. Is the DOF made in postproduction? The foreground blurred raspeberries (and this “container”) have strangely sharp silhouettes.

Apart from this, congratulations.

Looks great…

Harika olmuş. Elinize sağlık.
Özellikle kumaşın kıvrımları, tabaktan akan sos ve kırık çikolata çok güzel görünüyor.
