quicktime/HDV file not opening in AE, any ideas?

Hi,

I’m trying to open a Quicktime/HDV file in after effects, however it has the audio but no video, just white. Doesnt open in quicktime either. I’ve updated the quicktime player with no results.

Any ideas why this might be? Am i missing a codec maybe?

Best
Dave

Are you perhaps on a PC and trying to load footage encoded in Apple’s DVCPro HD codec?
If so, you’re out of luck. Apple hasn’t (won’t) release that codec for Windows. You will need to buy a third-party application to use that footage on a PC…afaik.

If you have access to the original MXF files, you can recode them with something like SUPER encoder (free) and get them into AE that way.

If you’re already on a Mac, it’s a different problem and I can’t help you!

He’s right, except the codec in question here is HDV (not DVCPro HD), so the decoding software you would need is this:

If you’re on a PC, you need the decoder above, or you need to be given the HDV .mov file in another format. Animation codec is a popular choice, as are image sequences.
If you’re on a Mac, it probably means you’ve moved to a machine without Final Cut Pro. Again, the decoder above will do the job. However, it’s technically possible to copy codecs/plugins from one Mac to another… but this (probably) violates various license/terms of use agreements.
