question about vray lights

#1

hey guys , how are you ?
i have got a scene , and i’am trying to light it with vray , so i ran in some kinda issue
i’am trying to make the light passes under the door , like in the reference , i had put a vray light shape behind the door , but it doesn’t get the shape i want so how can i make it look like the reference ?

one other question , how is the lights from the room (monster inc room) so soft !?
mine are just sharp and it have sharp shadows also
so any kinda of tips here would be useful .
(i’am using linear workflow in this image )

Reference (room from monster inc movie)

never mind guys i solved the problem , i had some issues in vray enviroment settings , plus i found the" Directional " and “Directional preview Length” attributes very helpful

which brings me to the other question , how to make that "soft glow light " look , which i always see in cartoons or illustrations , is it in post production ? or some kind of fog in the scene ?

Not sure what you are aiming for? Some reference images would be great.

Big (area) lights create soft shadows. Small lights create hard shadows. Glow etc. mostly will be created in post. You render out masks for that and can do all that stuff in your comp software.

thanks for your answer
i ran into this image a couple of days ago from 3d total gallery

this clearly shows the soft light i’am talking about

and this other one from a guy called “amir art” you can see that very very blue tiny fog / rays coming from the window

it’s just awesome seeing these lights , it makes the images really beautiful , and when i search i always end up with a tutorial talking about vray light intensity and color swatches

this is what my scene going so far

i want to make some fog / rays to come out from that computer screen

Your dropbox links don´t seem to work.

You talk about these artworks?

Ok. Works now for me. Your image doesn´t look bad. I don´t think you would need a fog, except you want something like that. I could imagine that this is a pure post effect (a gradient and a blending mode or reduced (and masked) opacity. And don´t forget, that your scene is untextured. That will add a lot of “life” to your image, depending what textures you are going to choose.

okay then , i will post a render when shading is finished
