Qns on Space/Parent Switching

#1

Hi all, I have some questions that I have encounter and I would like to seek some help from you guys after much google-ing the results online…

  1. I am trying to do a space/parent switching for a scenario where the hand is holding a cup for example, and would have the flexibility to detach itself away from the cup and goes back to retrieve it if needed to be…

My method of doing is:

  • Parent Constraint : Hand Ctrl to Hand
  • Parent Constraint : Cup Ctrl to Cup
  • Parent Constraint : Hand Ctrl to Cup Ctrl
  • Add in a new Attribute - Follow (On/Off) in the Hand Ctrl

When I started to do a simple animation/keyframing, everything works well, Cup follows the Hand whenever it moves/rotates etc… but the problem occurs when the following happens:

a. When I switch the Follow atr from On to Off, and moves the Hand a certain distance away from the Cup, the cup does not follows along with the Hand as such the Hand is having the flexibility to move alone… However as soon as I switch the Follow atr from Off to On, the Cup snaps right back to the position of the Hand instead of remaining at its position (where Follow is off)…

And so, how do I fix this problem?

I would like to know if this scenario of mine, can it be achieve/solve using the default functions/nodes etc in Maya without me having to install any scripting or plugins?

  1. For IK to FK snapping of the arms, can it also be done using similar methods as above, if there are solutions? Or is it perhaps a totally different case?

Many thanks in advance!

sounds like you may want to parent the hand_ctrl to cup_ctrl GROUP…since i assume it will cause a double transform on the cup if you constraint it directly
