Proper way to complete Stairs

Hey guys,

I am putting a scene together and perhaps I am overthinking this, as I am new to Mudbox.

I have a low poly staircase that I am looking to import into mudbox to produce high poly for normal maps. (see screen grab)

I am goofing myself up on what strategy I should be using to import the object. Meaning… Should I attach the stairs, but stringers/back piece. then do the railings separate? Or keep it as a whole mesh? Also do the meshes have to be air tight, or may I remove faces that are hidden from view?

Pretty sure I just need somebody to kick me in the arse. Appreciate any direction.

It really doesn’t matter, except that modeling around the intersection between two objects tends to be awkward. You don’t have to worry about the model being airtight.
