Im trying to animate a p51 mustang. The problem I am having is with the propeller blades being too visible while rotating. Ive aplied motion blur to object but it just multiplies the number of blades. Ive also tried object blur but it gives the propeller tips blur a square path
not a rounded path following the tips. Any help would be great.

I had a similar problem on an animation - I was using Vray and couldnt afford the extra rendering time to include the motion blur - I cheated, this is what I did:
- First I rendered a top view of only the blades with an alpha chanel
- Next I brought it into Photoshop and applied a radial blur, copied the blades around a few times until it looked like this (make sure you do it with a transparent background) - select the image and apply it as an alpha chanel, then save it as a tiff file (or whatever you like, so long as it has an alpha chanel). The image and alpha will look like this:
- Create a material and apply the image you just saved as the diffuse and opacity map, and make sure to select the alpha option under the opacity image to enable the image’s alpha chanel. Also make sure it’s 2 sided.
Get rid of your old blade, create a circle and turn it into a mesh, then apply the map. It should look something like this:
- The last bit is to animate the circle turning slowly, and add a visibility track with a waveform controller to make it flicker a bit.
Obviously spend a little more time than I did for this tutorial, and don’t forget the rear rotor!
Enjoy
