PROJECT PHOENIX ENTRY: Richard Joly

#1

I must participate. Spent a couple evenings on a great concept research that can’t surface. Thinking out of the box is not my strong point…
I will present my concept this weekend whatever I can come up with…
When Robert did his contest (Electro 303) couple months ago I felt very cheap not entering something because then, I had no time for it but… I had a concept.

Good Luck Richard.

Check out those links in the main forum on Lateral thinking. They’ll get your creative juices flowing.

#3

Thank you Brian.

Here it is: On a workbench, cluttered with opened tin toys, spare parts, old fishing reels and numerous broken accessories, a strange but beautiful Glass dome clock has been built with the discarted parts.

#4

Nice idea.

Would it help to tell the story with some tools placed on the bench (screw driver, hammer, plyers etc) as though they have been used to connect the parts together (you may have this in mind already).

Buggsy

#5

Thanks Michael. Yes there will be tools…

#6

Nice sketch work. Idea looks well thought out.

I remember my fathers workbench when I was a kid. It had rough, lumpy, chunky of wood forming the bench top and a vice off to one side for holding things in place while belting them into submission with a hammer.

Will your lighting be misterious and subtle reflecting the often poor lighting conditions that sometimes plague the backyard tinkerer.

Michael, you mind reader… I think you know exactly the mood I’m looking for.
Here are somes of my ref picts for mood and color scheme.

Can’t wait!!! This is gonna be so much fun

Thanks Ian, all I have to do now is model, setup, texture, light, render, tweek, render, tweek, render, tweek, render, tweek, render, tweek, render, tweek, render…

I was happy to see those post too but I didn’t get a chance to read them. I do however have a formula for creativity that I wanted to share. I take two extremes that often have nothing to do with each other and try to find something in common that I can make a connection. I have been doing this for years. I just call it connecting the dots.

Say a tea cup and a broom, the both have handles. I can make a broom handle teacup.

I combine them to come up with something original. Have you ever seen a broom handle teacup? No. Because I have the only one. (lol) And it’s brand new.
I’m sure this isnt the only way to be original but I use it alot. Just a suggestion. Sorry I couldn’t get to you earlier. Much Success.

#11

Would’nt want you to feel bad about it Alonzo but broom handle teacups are actually on sale at Home Depot…

#12

Oh Man…they have those already? What crazio would think of something like that? LOL
Just let’s you know, no matter how weird I am, there’s always someone one worst! lol

I haven’t read the Lateral thinking stuff yet, anything in particular that you liked about it?

#13

nice idea…will keep follow…

You’re off to a great start! Nice work on the cabinet. FormZ is my primary modeler too, especially for non-organic shapes. I like the wood texture you chose. Keep it coming!

Troy

#16

Wow Rick, looks good. Did you use wood textures or is that WoodLab? The labels are a nice touch.

Tim

#17

Thanks Tim. These are wood textures I feel they give me more control.

Throwing in more elements to get a sense of space.

Looks like it’s coming together already. Nice light so far. Looks like a great opportunity show off some glass effects and refraction.

Just keep in mind glass really doesn’t have a color, and to make something more reflective or shinier, the darker it needs to be, even black. Not is beats having the real reference item in front of you to match the look.

You think I write long boring articles, nothing compared to what I read. haha

Check this out.

Who said you where boring??? You write a lot and I read it so keep on boring me…
This “glass” dome in my picture is only a Phong transparent “thing” to show where transparency is. The thread you pointed me to is very interresting, too bad I can’t see the pictures.
This link has all the texturing tuts:

I must finish the modeling and texturing rapidly because the real challege for me in this image will be glass (thanks for the link), caustics and lighting with GI to create the mood I want. I have to learn all these little things making great looking imagery that I don’t need in my day job…

Just joking, I clown a lot.

For sure, I also definitely think one of the biggest benefits of this contest (beside the authentic ILM Jacket :), is challenging yourself in areas of EIAS that are less trodded.

That’s only Phong? Nice. EI ROCKS :buttrock:
