Procedural Texturing

#1

Hi guys,

I’ve been using Houdini for my procedural textures. Is there a program that has risen to the top as far as the standard for creating textures procedurally?

I couldn’t answer for all packages, but it really depends on what type of procedural material you’re looking for. Lansdcape shading? Vue and Bryce are still devastating at this and will both export mapped, hi-res image files if you want, for use in other apps. Maya, my main application, is on the surface horrible for procedurals, but once you start mixing nodes and application-to-geometry methods (projections, global shaders, 3D fractals) you can get some amazing results too. I use procedurals a lot for my flowers and leaves in big scenes to encourage uniqueness, for example, and to blend multiple image-file maps together in various ways too.

I think any procedural engine can be used to great effect, given some technical skill and imagination of course.
