Problem with sculpt tools

#1

Hey all

I’m having a problem with using any of the sculpt tools on my models. For some reason I’m unable to sculpt when the camera is close to the model. Even in the same stroke, I can begin sculpting on parts of the mesh away from the camera, however when I drag it to an area which is close to the camera, it stops sculpting. This is making it really difficult to use mudbox because I can’t get up close to the mesh to sculpt onto it.

I’ve tried it on different detail levels, different sizes, different strengths and different sculpt tools - all of which have the exact same response.

Is there an option or value that controls the distance the camera must be from the model to allow for scuplting?

Thanks,
Joel

Yeah, that’s a clipping pane problem. Go to the object list tab next to the layers tab, click on whatever camera you’re using (probably perspective), look at it’s properties where it says “near plane” and change it to .1, or .01, depending on how close you are (and how small your object is). The other way you could fix the problem is by scaling your meshes way up before you import into Mudbox. As far as I know, you’ll have to change the near clipping pane every time you start a new scene. I actually suggested a feature to them just today to allow you to permanently change the near clipping pane value in the camera settings. Here’s hoping they add that ability in an update or the next release.
