Problem Importing 3dsMax models into Mudbox

I am exporting my 3dsMax files (editable meshes) to the .obj format, and then opening them in Mudbox. When loading a file, the program slows down at the “calculating adjacency” stage, taking up to 20 minutes. When the model finally finishes loading, I cannot see it in the viewport.

I am not sure if it is a scale issue, too many polys, or if I am exporting the model with the wrong settings from .max to .obj format.

The total number of triangles on my test model is 54,400. In Max, my unit scale is “US Standard: Feet w/ Decimal Inches” and the model has a volume of roughly 2 feet by 2 feet by 1 foot. I am using 3ds Max 7 and Mudbox 1.0

Anyone else have a similar problem? Know how to fix it, and what I might be doing wrong? Thank you!
