Printing black/white artwork

#1

Hi All!

I have a question about printing black&white digital images. Why i’m asking is because i have stumbled upon several problems with this.

I have done some black and white pictures in photoshop and want too print these on high quality paper in a limited signed series. just like oldfashioned copperplate engraving/etchings and lithography. so i want a matt surface on the printed area, and this on a matt thick paper(like water clolourpaper)

Now. What is the best method for this when it comes to digital printings. taken in consideration quality, durability for the colours over time.

The problems i have seen is that when a black&white picture is printed in large inkprinters they mix the black from the printers colours, so the black and grey get a colourtone of some sort, like a varm red or cold blue.(on every printing office i’ve asked this is the case)

I tried printing on a laser printer. the problem here is that the printed surface gets glossy, and often they to mix the black from colours. if they are only b/w the image still look bad, like copying machine had done it.

i heard recently of Giclée prints. That they are used by artists. but i would think they have the same problem with b/w.

Anyone got any ideas or good information on this?

Thanx

I am told that the “Epson R220” is used by many photographers who mainly print B/W photos, because it uses special carbon based (?) inks to make sure the printed black colour does not have the slightest hues of any other colour in it.

you might inquire if that printer does the job for you and then go and look for a print shop who uses it.

Or you wait for a reply by someone who knows his shit…:scream:

I ended up using digital print. a large format inkprinter which uses 2 different graytones and black, the paper was 315grams cottonpaper. It was not cheap but realy good result. the same printer when printing colour images uses i think 8 or 12 different colours for the print. Think this is what is called giclee print.

but there are lots of different quality on printers that prints what can be called giclee. The most of the b/w images are printed with only black and the graytones in the picture are blended from the colors. that way the image isnt completly b/w. I got a testprint from another printercompany that used this kind of printer. and the result was poor.

Just wanted to share what I found out. If you 're interested in seeing the result check out my website

and how expensive is “not cheap” exactly?

btw, nicely graphic images. I went to the gallery. The prints in there (pics of prints on the wall) are the ones we’re talkin about?

I’d say it landed on about 20€ per image(33x43cm). Because I printed several copies I got a better price. Had I only printed one it would have been around perhaps 30€.

I’m glad to here you liked it. Yes it was the framed ones on the wall.

If you’re thinking of printing something I must say I recommend this type of printing. Very good result.
