Printing: "Black areas supported with 50% Cyan". How??

#1

The company which is to print a current job has the following instruction about CMYK-images:

  • Black areas are to be supported with 50% Cyan.

How do I practically go about doing that in Photoshop or Illustrator?
Please give menu-specific instructions, thank you!

How do you normally produce your images in Photoshop?
I usually open a psd file and start working unless I have to follow a specific color palette.

My remedy may be a bit backwoods/home grown and may not the best approach, but here goes.
If you are working on the fly in a psd file take note of your default black cmyk make up.
Do this by clicking on the small black square (over the small white square) near the bottom of the toolbox. For example, my default black is:
c 63
m 52
y 51
k 100
Make sure somewhere in your image you have a default black area. If you don’t have one, make one. Go to Selective Color (check relative) then go to Black and reduce or increase the cyan until you get an eyedropper reading indicating that your default solid black has 50% cyan in it. Note this all has to be done when the image is complete with no further work required. BTW, this method works with photos too.
—Again, there is probably an easier way but until someone else chimes in, this is all I got.
