Preview Render in a separate window?

#1

I was watching a tutorial and in it the guy locked down his render preview window and then changed some render settings and hit preview again. It opened up a new preview window for him, but whenever I try it, it overwrites the image in the open preview window.

He was using XSI 6 or 7. I’m using the Softimage 2010 trial.

So is there a setting somewhere to make the previews open in separate windows? I can’t find one anywhere or in the manual… unless it’s worded in some geeky cryptic fashion, and not something simple like “render preview in a separate window”

Note that I’m talking about the button on the left-hand side of the interface under the Render tab that says “Preview”, not the interactive “Q” render preview you draw out in a view port.

And while I’m thinking about it, is there a keyboard shortcut for Render Preview?

Thanks.

from the user’s guide:

Previewing a Single FrameComparing Render Previews

You can open more than one render preview and compare separate results in each window.

  1. Choose Render > Preview from the Render toolbar to open a viewer and generate a preview.

  2. Click the Lock button to stop the viewer from updating when the scene changes.

  3. Choose View > Rendering/Texturing > Render Preview from the main menu to open a second preview window.

  4. Make modifications to your scene. You can then compare the result in the locked preview window with the result in the current preview window.

Well thank you, toonafish, that works.

I found it in the manual by putting "Comparing Render Previews" in the search box. Before I was just finding stuff about the viewport “Q” render and the overall render options. Man, that manual is enormous… I could easily spend my whole 30 days of demo time just reading it.
