Poser to Lightwave MDD

#1

Hi guys, Now I´m working on a personal project of a character slam dunk… and I got one major issue to solve: I want to export the animation from Poser Pro to Lightwave 9.5, maintaining the textures.

I´d appreciate if anyone can help me through this.

I did 700 frames of animation in POSER, exported the lwo files, created the MDD file for LW using the MDD Compiler and exported an OBJ file of the model from Poser to Lightwave.
I tried 2 methods bringing it into LW Layout, with OBJ and LWO exact models (from the frame 0).
1- My OBJ model comes with the textures, but doesn´t accept the MDD file in Layout (it stretches all vertices… I got the subdivision order to last and didn´t change anything on the model…
2- The LWO model accepts the MDD file properly, but not the materials (it has got the UV coordinates, and the textures, but it doesn´t stick to the model) .

Thanks for the attention,

You can try this.

You might want to check out the “Poser to LightWave Kit” plug-ins:
http://www.kurvstudios.com/software/plk-index.php

I haven’t used it because, it’s only available for the PC version of Lightwave and I use the Macintosh version. That said it looks amazing! I’ve bought other products from “http://www.kurvstudios.com”; everything worked perfectly.

This may be a little wierd, but it should work. In Poser, save out in both the OBJ and LWO formats making sure not to change how anything is named. In Lightwave, open the OBJ figure and then open up the LWO figure - do not use Load Object into Layer.

Open the Surface Editor and expand both figures. The names should be nearly identical, but unfortunately not perfect. As an example, using the Poser standard G2 Simon figure… in the surface editor, right-click on a texture for the OBJ object (example: CasualPants_Smoothing) and select Copy, then go down to the LWO object surfaces and right-click on Figure1_CasualPants and select Paste. This is somewhat time-consuming, but at least these surfaces save with the LWO object and they look correct and the MDD files should work too. At least it’s cheaper than buying a plugin if you don’t have the cash. of course PLK from Kurv is VERY good too!!

Thanks for the replies! I´m going to try them and come back for report.

Thanks for the plug, yeah PLK is amazing! Lots of folks using it to save weeks of time in their pipeline.

Thanks again!

Megalodon, about your suggestion: I tried this right from the beggining, but the UV coordinates didn´t come with my LWO, exported from Poser. I think this is my principal issue here, as I can get the MDD working fine with the LWO.
I tried exporting a LWO (huge object file) from Accutrans 3d too, the surfaces were right, same as working Wavefront OBJ, and it doesn´t animate either…

I made an example file to see if we can work this think out…

Thanks again.

This is working fine for me and apparently the UVs do transfer over. Are you sure you are exporting the LWO as an LWO2? The original LWO does not support UV’s while the LWO2 does.

I just tried it again and it works fine.

And my machine just died. Great. Gotta rebuild. :frowning:
