Portfolio Review

#1

Hey all,

I’ve put together a PDF of my portfolio that I’m going to be sending out to a couple companies. Bioware in Edmonton has openings for concept artists and that will be the first place I apply to. If you have some free time and want to check it out and give me your thoughts, I’d appreciate it.

Right now, I still need to add a couple more environments that I’m working on. That btw, is my weakest point. I do prefer to draw characters and costumes but I’m working hard to be well rounded. I don’t have a webhost right now so I posted my portfolio on one of those file sharing sites. I hope it works for everyone. Oh, just for security and paranoia I blanked out my resume and contact information but will include those things when I send out the final version.

Thanks for your help!

Roger

whao u got some freaky, nice stuff… well i liked it overrall only thing that bothered me was the proportions of ur characters… i dunno to me u always seem to make the bottom half way too big for the top half and the arms always looks too skinny even for ur more muscular characters…

i liked most of the photoshop stuff u did just the proportions of characters bothered me… see if that helps maybe i could be wrong maybe thats ur style or it’s actually what you were going for…

Thanks for your comments. No, that’s a fair assessment. I’ll look through them again and see what I can rework. Thanks.

I just looked at your portfolio, and I’ll be perfectly honest with you–at this point, you’re still quite a ways from possible employment by a studio like Bioware (or most game dev houses). The main weakness of your stuff right now is that you haven’t learned enough of the basics yet. When your basic art foundation is shaky, how can you expect to compete with all the seasoned professionals out there who are solid artists with industry experience?

You do seem to know exactly what you want, and you’ve been on the right path–as your concept stuff is right on the money in terms of focus. However, the execuation itself is very important, because a good costume design sitting on a bad figure drawing isn’t pleasant to look at for anyone, and character design is definitely an area that requires a solid knowledge of anatomy and figure drawing.

Read this thread if you haven’t yet: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=296767

I think you’re off on a good start, but it seems like you’ve jumped the gun a bit–trying to run before learing to walk. Now you have to slow down and strenghthen your art foundation. A great place to start is the sticky thread in this forum for tutorials–there are some real gems in there that will help you tremendously.

Thanks for your time and advice.

rogfa,

Sorry if I’m retarded (a most likely possibility) but I was unable to see your files. Is it possible for you to host your images / post them here? It might make it easier for dumb people like me.

Cheers,

No, it’s my fault Rebecca. I have made it rather complicated to view. And I’m very appreciative to those who got it to work for them. I don’t have a webhost right now so I’ve posted it on Imageshack.

Hope this works better for everyone. Thanks for looking.

Roger

I’ve had to separate the thumbnails.

More thumbnails.

Yet more.

I think that’s the last of them…

rogfa,

Thanks! :)

Looks like you’ve got a lot of initiative and drive, which is always prerequisite to putting together a good portfolio.

While I can’t help you with guns, environments, or automobiles, I can help you with figures ~
definitely check out the Anatomy Forum ~ we have tons of resources there to help improve folks’ art.

I suggest starting here:

Tutorials, Workshops, Anatomy Reviews & More … [links within]
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=273525

In particular, I suggest you check out the Open Figure Drawing Workshops, which are all linked in post #3 of the Sticky Thread linked above. OFDW 008 is the most recent, and all OFDWs contain some incredible work! Definitely peruse them at your leisure, I think that there is a lot to be learned there. Many folks have started out with basic paintings and turned out some beautiful works!

TUTORIAL - Digital Figure Painting - by Samanthie

These are linked in the top Sticky Thread as well. They cover Digital Figurative Painting step by step.

You will find that my main emphasis is on VALUES. I think it’s far more important than color in both Traditional and Digital work. If you Desaturate any of your images, (and this applies to any of us) it is much easier to spot deficiencies in how we’ve constructed and built form.

Finally, check out the 15 Minute Sketchathon:
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=2838832&postcount=13

Where the main emphasis is on capturing the movement and gesture of a figure. Very useful exercises, and completely addictive and fun!

Like I say, none of these things will help you with your environments directly, but I think that the study of Value and Composition will indirectly help you to improve your work.

Hope to see your participation!

Cheers,

~Rebeccak
