Poor shadows when animating with prepass solution

#1

Heya all,

Just a quick question: Is it a common problem that when animating fast moving objects with the animation prepass setting in Vray 2.0 the shadows seem to disappear? I try to render a driving car, when I render single frame everything is fine but when I render a sequence of images with IR prepass set to high, the shadow of the car disappears…

Well I render a separate shadow pass anyways, so I can comp that in later, but still it makes me wonder… have you had the same problem ever since and how could you solve it?

Thanks for any suggestions in advance,

You shouldn’t be using prepass when there are elements moving around. You can make a prepass for the background, (stuff that doesn’t move), and render that; then do a second render pass with a VraySphereFade around the car, with a per-frame Irradiance.

You can also set the car to not affect GI, and fake proximity shadows with an occlusion pass. With this option you only need the prepass, then render with the car (similar to what your doing).

Another option, if you have time and a powerful renderfarm, is to render each frame with per-frame Brute Force. Instead of bias errors (splotchiness) produced by irradiance maps, Brute force evens out the noise, with enough quality it’s a subtle noise across the sequence.
