Please Help A New Maya User :(

#1

Hello guys. I’m a Max user trying to get a grasp on Maya for an upcoming class I’m going to take. I have a few small questions that I would like to know.

  1. When you plain right click, and it shows vertex, edge, and face, how can I get those commands in my own custom shelf?

  2. When I connect or use insert edge loop, I can’t get out of the mode. How do I get out of it? I tried pressing escape, backspace, etc. and it won’t get out of it.

  3. When creating my own marking menu, how do I create this part of a marking menu? https://gyazo.com/28819c994d6eb9c79f7aa84fbf981d9e

Thanks that’s all for now. I appreciate any help I can get.

  1. Use F9 for verts, f10 for edges, f11 for faces. Also F8 is object mode.
  2. Press Q or W or E or R
  3. dunno

Some friendly advice for you MickeyTheLad,

Don’t waste your time with Maya. You are going to regret it. I promise.

always wondering why those Trolls still haunting the forum, you have plenty of other 3d solution just pick the one you like.

  1. you should really get used to the marking menu, you will see once you get used to it you will be able to model really fast compared to the others. You don’t have to wait for the menu to appear, just a quick movement will get you to the tool/component mode. You can also access multiple level of the marking menu by quickly trace the mouvement.

  2. for this part of the marking menu just add your command in the left bottom square and another square will show up, they will stack on top of each others.

Thanks for the help guys. But I kind of worded my questions a bit wrong, although you guys already answered some. I guess my only real question now is is it possible to edit the built in marking menus that come on when you shift + right mouse on different modes? (e.g vertex mode, edge mode, etc) I like how it works, I just want to change them up a bit for myself. Thanks yall

the short answer is yes, you can customize pretty anything in maya.

it’s not that straightforward, you will have to hunt the .mel file that is dealing with the menu you want to modify.
You will find most of them here C:/Program Files/Autodesk/Maya2017/scripts/others

To make things easier for you turn on in the script editor " History -> echo all commands " this will allow you to see what maya is doing under the hood. (when you are done with the “echo all commands” turn it off again, it can slow down maya)

Also i would advise to not directly modify the original maya file to keep things clean, just duplicate the .mel you want to modify and call it on startup.

i don’t believe the first question was answered in satisfaction of the topic starter

  1. you can add such options to a shelf that by
  • finding the option you want, listed in the main menu
for example you will find the Right Click > Vertex option in the main menu > Select > Polygons > Components > Vertex
  • hold Ctrl + Shift
  • press the Left Mouse Button on the option
  • you should see a new icon on your current shelf saying “Sets Vertex Mask” for example
  • save the current shelves configuration in order to keep it (click at the icon at the left of the Shelves and select Save All Shelves)

if you are coming from 3DS Max then honestly i can’t say i disagree with Nickjoll unless you need something very specific from Maya for example a plugin that is used on an project made in Maya by someone else or something of that sort
