Hello

  1. If you intend to model human characters it is good to understand how they are constructed physically, knowing how things go together will allow you to build believable characters.

  2. This will include how the body changes with age, weight…

  3. You need to know how the body is built so that when you pose or animate a character/model. Bones, muscles, tendons, skin all have to work in conjunction for a person to move. If you want that sense of realism of body motion in your work, you have to understand the driving forces behind it.

  4. Understnd how people work will aid you in your creating of imaginary beings/creatures. This is because it you understand the mechanics of human bodies and motion, you’ll better understand how to construct fanciful creatures that still appear as if they could be physically possible.

Good Luck

Greetings everyone,

Allow me to bother you for a bit, but since art-anatomy is a ( kind of ) new subject for me, as artists, do we have to study the human anatomy in a very detailed way ? just like the physical therapists do ?

Or it is enough to just get the general idea of most important muscle movements, such as the visible ones only, just like we memorized that the knee bone does not move forward or to sides ?

Hopefully i have not taken much of your time.

Sorry for my English, i am trying.

P.S : I am new to GC, and you guys simply rock.

It depends on what you are doing really. If you are a comic book artist then you will probably be drawing a lot of very scantily clad and muscular figures, in all manner of dynamic poses. Comic book artists have to be very knowledgeable about all visible muscles, as well as the skeleton veins and fatty areas. As well as how the muscles move and how figures change from hulking to scrawny, male to female etc…

You probably don't need to learn it all at once, but the deeper your knowledge is the deeper your understanding will be. With a deep understanding you will find it easier to produce realistic figures quickly and consistently. This goes for drawing and 3D modelling.

I would say that the face and hands are by far the most important things to know and get right, because they are nearly always visible and a focal point of you work. People are also very sensitive to even the slightest imperfections in these areas from looking at each other. So they will notice instantly if you get something wrong, even if they are not sure what it is, they will still think it looks freaky. Mistakes to the face or hands are in a sense ‘unforgivable’.
