-[Note: I’ve found a few current threads on this issue–even a handful in last 8 months or so…
but no clarity yet for CG artist who’s a noob @ hardware…
yet seems alot of us are in similar sceanrio].
Ok: i’m looking at choice between GTX 6xx/7xx perhaps 8xx series vs. the affordable Quadro2000,
which is priced fairly close–when compared to $$$ for Q4000 & up.
My new rig will be used for low-volume 3d & various Ps paint work–
i won’t have large animations/heavy render pipeline…
i used to work in content creation on models & environments/assets for video games studios + some med/science & video post here n there, w/ a little illustration.
So i’m changing career, thus no need for hi-volume such as production house w/ large clients/projects.
I’ll also be experimenting on some output for 3d-printing, otherwise just low volume, so my poly counts & geometry could get large but not “huge”-- & no big worlds or hefty-production-deadlines.

I’m aiming for:
- Asus mobo Z77 Pro V…
- i5 3570k (tho open to i7 still)
- 8 gb sys ram expandable in W7 pro/64bit up to 32 [perhaps 64, not an issue on this build though].
- 3d: Max, modo, zBrush, possibly C4d.
- 2d: Ps for most of it–tho i liked C4d’s 3d-paint-system in the past so still use it for some paint).
- 3d: Max, modo, zBrush, possibly C4d.
–&--No heavy video editing-- No gaming.
The difficulty that i've learned is that cards & GPUs are now finely tuned / optimized per software package ;
But i’ll be using quite a few, don’t want to have to loose that methodology–as well as doing the 2d paint--
Problem: i don’t know much at all re: hardware or algorithms/math for such things.
So i'm having hard time sifting thru info on the ways
current video cards & GPU cores/mem are now offering so many options: optimizing for vertex data, polys, mapping & rendering algorithms, but since i'm not gaming or doing serious video editing,
i’m hoping this might help make the choice easier ?
The cards & GPU’s are far beyond my hardware/tech knowledge–and Nvidia seems to be ‘coy’ about never really saying “this is gamer hardware” but “not” for professional artists.
oi.
The advanced video cards & GPUs blow away all the hardware i used when i was doing my work out west yrs ago…
OK : THANX for any advice.. mucho appreciated.
