Interview with Autodesk’s Teresa Anania on Moday 5/15 at 2:00 PT. We will be chatting about Autodesk’s recent move to subscription only, their plans for continued Maintenance on current perpetual licenses and the letter that was sent out to their customers regarding such plans. Teresa reached out to me after a previous Live Stream concerning Autodesk’s recent announcements regarding Subscription and I’m happy that she agreed to an interview.

Please find links to the Live Stream on Monday on the Pixel Fondue YouTube Channel and also look for a Tweet. If you subscribe you will get a notification of the LiveStream automatically.

Hi Greg,
Thanks for the heads up.
Is it also going to be uploaded as an audio interview on the pixel fondue podcast?

Thank you,

Perry

Final interview is up. I broke it down into sections in the comments and on the Pixel Fondue site (http://www.pixelfondue.com/blog/2017/5/15/pixel-fondue-live-stream). There is some new info regarding access to previous versions as well as subscription prices after the first 3 years. In a nutshell, they’re attempting to keep subscription price on par with what current owners pay for maintenance…similar to what Foundry is doing with MODO. If you’re a Maya or Max user…may be worth a watch.

Perry, I will definitely put the recorded version up on the PF YouTube channel and the PF web page. I will also try and get it converted to audio and put up on SoundCloud for the podcast session (thanks for reminding me!)

Oh well, what I expected.

Good job I wasn’t playing the PR Jargon drinking game.

AD Doubling down on trying to get people to switch.

They could offer all sorts, I’m not giving up my perpetual licence, ever.

It doesn’t matter if I give them a year - I’m just not interested in subscription, more likely cancel after next year - Max 2018 was a joke for a full release. It’s not even worth the current maintenance sub, let alone 38% more in three years time.

Why on earth should any user ‘have faith’? AD have shown themselves time and time again to go out of their way to piss off their users, and flat out do a 180 within a year, twice.

Yeah…I’m hearing that from a lot of people. Just not interested in sub. I actually renewed my maintenance for another year. If they do give a decent amount of cloud rendering (or similar) then I may switch…because I spend a lot of money at Rebus. It is nerve-wracking though. It’s also depends on the package…although I have Max I don’t use it…I use Maya quite a bit and I have to give AD credit there. Maya (in the last 3 or 4 releases) has done a very good job (IMO) with updates. So…yeah…not so much for Softimage (lol) or even Mudbox though.

Redshift for me. I’m not going to give AD another penny where I don’t have to.

Her comment about ‘we’re not going to gouge our customers’ was jaw-dropping. Their past and current attitude towards customers says otherwise.

They screwed over combustion users by offering no upgrade path to Toxic and that killed it. (Along with raising the cost to more than the price of Max)

SI users got screwed

Mudbox users got screwed

Max updates have been pretty slim - at least for what I want to use - over the years they ditched reactor and mental ray.

They gave extra particle flow subs extensions to those on suites, the ones on just Max subs got pretty much FA.

Even before the ludicrous year on year increases for maintenance subs, and 180s on rentals for Max and Arnold, they’ve just got form for taking every opportunity to screw their customers, under the guise of making things simpler.

The policy of losing access to earlier versions of your software when you stop subscription stinks.

Try to use an earlier version without subs and you get a letter from licensing threatening legal conseqences.

They’re a terrible software company, and I wouldn’t shed a tear if they went to the wall.

Everybody loves Redshift.lol. ; ) Well, I think it’s coming to Houdini and C4D…and eventually MODO. I honestly think a talented artist could make do with any of these programs today (most of my work is more suited to MODO then Maya)…it’s just that it’s a ton of effort to switch 3D programs. I’ve done it 3 times in my career…Lightwave3D->Maya->MODO/Maya…don’t really want to do it again…just don’t. That’s part of the whole ‘we have to leverage’ issue.

Houdini RS is pretty well developed been out for a while, it’s also getting some new particle instancing tech before the others. C4D version is in alpha.

Katana was the latest announcement, nothing on Modo yet.

Thank you for doing that, Greg.

Very much appreciated!
