Pipeline complexity - stereo vs "mono"

#1

Looking for some insight on how much extra work involved in making stereo animation vs “mono” animation.

3D rendering time doubleup a frame for both eyes?
Layout of scene - extra depth considerations?
Heavier and more complex compositing?
Is a pipeline tied to specific playback equipment?

It really depends the software in compositing on whether it is slower or not. For 3d though, you do get some speed hit for rendering 2 frames but again it depends the renderer.

Im at a 3dsmax w vray -> AfterEffects pipeline.

And another thing, how do you quickly preview the 3d effect - im doing commercial stuff in a relatively small team - with very short deadlines - so quick iterations are essential to us.

The 3d part is just double the renders. You only need to setup the camera properly.

Afterfx on the other hand adds a lot more work. You have to do one eye, copy that setup and do the other eye again and adjust settings for the right eye. The big pita comes with iterations. Every time you do something on the left you you have to go and redo it on the right eye no matter how small of a change. Giant pita.

Nuke is nicer in this respects because it allows you to work in a single tree with both eyes.
