Pinata simulation

Hello,

I’m trying to simulate a piñata breaking, and I was wondering if someone can point me in the right direction of what tools to use in maya. I’ve been doing a few tests with Maya’s nCloth, but I haven’t been able to get the control I want from it’s tearable surface feature. Ideally, what I’m looking to do is fracture my CG model and then, through nCloth, tear pieces of my model apart.

Select the edges you wish to split along on do detach component(select edges as opposed to points unless you wish the edges to be more frayed). Then make the result nCloth. Select all the points along the edges and create a component to component constraint… set the glue strength on the constraint to make it breakable, and make the type “weld”. Then optionally you may wish to do a merge and soft normal to hide the tear.
