Photoshop Paper Texture?

#1

I do most of my work in Painter but would like to try to Paint in Photoshop to see how it compares. One thing I like about Painter is the ability to select a “Paper Texture” to apply the paint to thus giving you a sort of layered dry brush look.

Is it possible to select a paper texture in Photoshop or does Photoshop rely totally on the brushes for the texture?

Problem
When I select a brush in Painter I can layer colors dark to light and the colors are added at different angles giving a realistic painterly look but in Photoshop when I use a brush and select “Scatter” the overlying colors are applied in exactly the same position therefore giving an unrealistic look, Does anyone know how to use the brushes so they behave like real media?

yes, the paper texture are brush depended unless you use a paper texture on another layer and make it work together. quite easy

as for the painting “problem”, go to the brush settings —> color dynamics and play around with settings there

PS is not really made for “real” painting like painter, artrage, TB, SAI etc. it will be in CS5 but not now
if you’re after realistic painting i recommend you stick with above named programs

hope it helps

ps. forgot to mention that you can use burn tool or dodge tool with a brush with a paper texture added to it. you can do this after your piece is done. quite nice effect

Thanks for the reply Arek.

Can you explain how to make the paper and brush work together?

What is TB and SAI? Good to know CS5 will have more painterly type of method. I hope it feels somewhat like Painter, because IMO right now it doesn’t feel too much real media.

as for the layer, you’ll have to experiment a bit on each picture. if the picture is very dark you can’t use the same layer mode as for very bright one. usually it’s best to blend two or more layers with different modes. in other words you just fill a layer with paper texture and begin to play around. but i still recommend the burn tool. give it a test

SAI = SAI Painting Tool. it’s english translation so check out their official site
it’s a perfect tool for quick sketching/painting

TB = Pixara TwistedBrush. there’s a free version you can download
tons and tons of brushes to explore. i really love some of them and i haven’t been able to mimic them in other apps

Try making your paper texture a layer mask and apply your brush strokes through that.

You might even try a tiny emboss layer style, but this could look cheesy if not kept subtle.

Depends on the look you want.

Thanks Arek and Joseph I will give that a try. Thanks for the links too Arek.
