Photoshop and Vista:smoothing issue

#1

Hello all,
After constating that Photoshop was more efficient in Vista…i decided to make the step ans installed it on my comp…

But now i have a weird issue:
smoothing when painting is very clunky…
sometimes it’s fine but sometimes it’s like ps forgot what i did with my cursor and join
the 2 endpoints with a straight line…giving some horrible looking linecurve…

it’s not related to the tablet (Wacom) since it’s happening with the mouse also…
CS2 or CS3 same problem…
i tried to reinstall…

btw, opencanvas and PAinter are giving me superb curvy lines…so it’s only PS problem.

anybody with the same issues? some solutions?
thanks anyway

Hi, unfortunatelly there is a big Problem with Vista. Photoshop + Vista = Crap.
There is a lot of lag between the brush strokes. (No matter Photoshop 7, CS2, CS3)
I have the same problem as you. And there is a 10 page topic in conceptart.org regarding this issue. Unfortunatelly again there is no fix.
I contacted the guys from Wacom (There is a lot of flood with this issue on their forum), but they said to me that, this is Nvidia Drivers Related Problem. So I contacted the guys from Nvidia but they couldt remake the bug, and told me to turn of Aero Theme... (Its off guys… but it doesnt help). From Adobe is the same. It left only Microsoft, and may be some genious from MS didnt know that we can maybe paint on Vista… :>

Sry, there is no solution for now… i looked everywhere.

PS. Hardware: 4GB Ram, Core 2 Duo E6420, Nvidia 8800 GTX with latest drivers, Wacom Intuos A4 with latest drivers. turned of all Pen Recognition Options in Vista, Aero off, Visual Settings on “Best Performance” and very annoying lag in Photoshop.

thanks for the answer…
due to some craps with nvidia drivers i had to go back to XP…
and i have exactly the same issue than on Vista (except no lag on input…but unsmooth lines)…

i never experienced that previously on XP, but i was with ATI…
since i got my geforce 7900GS i’m having this problem…

Got the same problem with CS3 and Vista.

Running a Q6600, 3Gigs RAM, Logitech Mouse, Wacom Tablet, nVidia chipset, ATI video card on Vista 32. Aaargh, its annoying. XP here I come.

#5

I had the same problem till I update vista wacom and nvidia drivers.

Vista is garbage! I have the new mac pro, dual quad core. 4 gigs of ram. I ran Vista for half a day and just got fed up. thats why i run xp x64. So much better, u get the best of both.

#7

Looks like XP is getting re-installed.

#8

Dual quad core is extreme overkill, I can’t think of one single application for Vista that would make use of that. Good for bragging right though.

#9

thats not true at all, dual quad core is amazing for rendering, specially with Vray. It utilize all the 8 cores.

Have you disabled all the Pen tools that com with vista? They arent needed to use your Wacom tablet drivers and only cause extra lag and delay. t took me a while to disable them on my PC but once i did all my pen related issues were resolved.

Check out vlite to remove unused features from vista… makes it alot better infact id say vista is now far superior to XP once all the junk is removed from it.

#11

i’ll definitly keep that in mind if i reinstall windows vista

#12

Just wanted to let you guys know that there is a simpler way to disable the TabletPC stuff than using VLite, and best of all, you wont need to reinstall.

Just go to your Control Panel, Select Programs, and then from the Sidebar, select “Turn Windows features on or off”. When the list opens, scroll down to Tablet PC Optional Components, and uncheck the box. Clicking okay will uninstall all of the Tablet PC stuff, and hopefully resolve all those pesky problems.

I havent tried it yet myself, I am waiting for the next reboot

Hi Darkling,

Just wanted to thank you for your tip. I didn’t have a problem with CS3, which I have running now with Vista Home Premium, but did with CS2, which really lagged. I never did take it off when I upgraded, so I just went through the steps regarding the Tablet PC software, now CS2 runs fine. And to think I upgraded, sheesh. Live and learn. I’m running on a desktop by the way, not a tablet PC.

i have a temporary solution for the lag : keep pressing Tab twice … to refresh the screen , there wont be any lag until you use " H" tool to move arround. …

#15

However, in m point of view, I would rather use WinXp Pro 64x than vista. Even though I have found out some tips to fix the problems so far, but thinking that I had a good time with my old WinXP Pro makes me come back to use it again.

Well, I am an artist and I will just look for something that needed

#16

The lag (with mouse and tablet) only happens for me when I zoom in on an image and pan around it. Drawing then becomes extremely laggy and sticky.
The fix I discovered is to alt-tab another window up on top of photoshop (say you have firefox open, but any fullscreen window will do) and then tab back to phototshop and its all perfectly smooth again. I have to do this every time I pan to a new area of the canavs.
Extremely annoying.

#17

it seem single Tab would be quicker  ( show and hide tool windows)
i see that the problem less happens when i upgrade to 3GB , i dont know it 's true or not … or just my imagination… :frowning:

#18

No, tabbing doesn’t work for me, I have to cover PS with another window and tab back again to refresh it.
I have 4gb of RAM, but PS is 32 bit so I think it can’t use more than 2, or just under 2.

Guys…i dont want to shout victory to soon…
but by installing the Release candidate of SP1, the lagging has vanished!

You might want to try it…i’ll do further testing…it’s only been a few hours since i have the new SP1

So is RC1 stable? Any problems since?
