For starters, you need good texturing and lighting–that’s true even for very simple models. Beyond that, to create advanced images, you would need to buckle down and study the foundations of visual art. Look in the various technique-specific forums around here and read all the sticky thread in them–they all contain great tutorials that aren’t just for teaching specific techniques, but also the theories behind them.
