Photographs as textures

#1

Hello guys!

Is it ok to use photographs as textures for games? In some tutorials they use photographs to create textures and in many others they paint it in Photoshop. What is the correct way to do it?

Whatever works.

Yes that’s true. Sometimes a combination of both works fine, but whatever gives the result you want or need is what matters.

Using photos is common for photorealistic games (Battlefield, Call of Duty). There’s usually some modification done to the photos to maintain the overall look of the game (colors, etc.), and combining/layering multiple photos to create a unique texture is pretty standard.

For an artistic stylized game (World of Warcraft), you could create a hand painted texture look from a photo using filters and such, but the results generally aren’t as good as hand painting from scratch, and you can often tell it’s been modified from a real photo.

Hand painting also allows you to create the texture exactly how you want it to look, which is usually important for stylized graphics.
